Small Team, Big Impact—How ClickHouse® Empowered Rootz to Build a High-Performance Data Platform

Company
Rootz – Rootz LTD is an iGaming company that has become the parent platform to five online casinos: Wildz, Wheelz, Spinz, Caxino and Chipz.
Problem
When Rootz set out to build their own platform five years ago, they needed a solution that could not only handle large volumes of data efficiently, but would also be easy to manage without significant operational overhead.
Solution
Rootz was initially drawn to ClickHouse by two key factors: speed and cost-effectiveness. ClickHouse offered unmatched performance at a fraction of the cost of proprietary platforms. After running initial benchmarks against SQL Server, they were blown away by how well ClickHouse handled large datasets, delivering fast, real-time query performance.
But performance was just the beginning. What really sold the team on ClickHouse was its real-time materialized views and dictionaries. These features allowed them to streamline their data transformation process without needing additional layers of software or servers. Everything happens within ClickHouse itself, simplifying their workflows and reducing the amount of code they have to write.
And remarkably, all of this is managed by a small team of just three people.
Basically materializing and transforming the data happens in real time within ClickHouse. The results of this materialized data, with some BI logic, lands into dictionaries. Wherever the business or the platform needs any data or information about our customers, it just uses the get functions and retrieves the information in constant time – within two milliseconds, which is not possible in a traditional query.

Use of ClickHouse for Machine Learning
Rootz is also leveraging ClickHouse for machine learning projects. One of their models analyzes player data during registration to predict which players are likely to be valuable long-term. This prediction happens in real-time—by the time a player completes registration, their system has already determined if they qualify for an extra bonus, thanks to the efficiency of ClickHouse’s materialized views and CatBoost integration.
How Altinity helps Rootz
As Rootz’s data needs grew, so did the complexity of managing their ClickHouse deployment. Initially, Rootz was able to roll out a traditional near-real-time data warehouse from scratch with minimal effort, thanks to the efficiency of ClickHouse. But when the volume of stored transactions reached tens of billions, they began seeking not just performance improvements but also the ability to handle all transactional data in raw format for BI reporting and analytics. They aimed to achieve true real-time data processing capabilities.
Altinity’s support became invaluable at this stage. Their team helped evaluate Rootz’s current data warehouse schema and design, providing best practices and performance-tuning suggestions. This guidance enabled Rootz to achieve their desired data warehouse state, saving months of research and development. Now, when Rootz encounters challenges, they always turn to Altinity for expert guidance. With Altinity’s support, Rootz has been able to optimize their ClickHouse instance to meet the demands of their rapidly growing platform.
Altinity helped us greatly by evaluating our current DWH schema state and design and guided us with best practices and suggestions for performance tuning to achieve our desired DWH state which saved us months of research and development.

Conclusion
ClickHouse has enabled Rootz to build a high-performance data platform that scales with ease. Real-time materialized views and dictionaries have made data processing simpler, while ClickHouse’s speed and low cost let them handle growing data volumes. The most impressive part? It’s all managed by a small, dedicated team of just three people, proving that with ClickHouse, a small team can achieve big results. Altinity is proud to support Rootz on their journey.
