SELF 2025 talks: Modern Application Debugging: An Introduction to OpenTelemetry & My NixOS-Powered Homelab

June 15 All day

We’re thrilled to announce that our colleague, Josh Lee, will be speaking at SELF 2025 – SouthEast Linux Fest 2025! 🌟

Josh will be sharing his expertise in two insightful talks:

  • Modern Application Debugging: An Introduction to OpenTelemetry

In this talk, Josh Lee will introduce OpenTelemetry, the open-source standard for collecting metrics, logs, and traces from modern applications. He’ll guide attendees through instrumenting a microservices app running on Kubernetes, using tools like Jaeger and Prometheus to analyze telemetry data. Whether you’re new to observability or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll leave with practical knowledge to improve debugging and monitoring in your own projects.

  • My NixOS-Powered Homelab

In this session, Josh Lee shares how Nix—the powerful, declarative package manager—has transformed the way he manages his homelab infrastructure. From replacing Homebrew and Docker to provisioning VMs on Proxmox with nixos-generators, Josh will demonstrate how he uses NixOS to deploy and manage services like Grafana, Docker, and Tailscale. Attendees will learn how to remotely update VMs, configure WireGuard routers, and run Docker containers—all through reproducible Nix configurations. Perfect for homelab enthusiasts and anyone curious about scaling their Nix usage beyond development environments.

Dive into Josh’s journey with NixOS and how he optimizes his homelab setup for efficiency and performance.

Join us in celebrating Josh’s contributions to the tech community at SELF 2025. Don’t miss out on these must-attend sessions!
