Open Source cost-efficiency in action: analyzing 500B rows on a single ClickHouse server

Modern analytical databases scale very well with data size. However, when business scales with the data, infrastructure costs should be very well controlled. Cost-efficiency and performance become critical for big data analytics in many businesses.

ClickHouse is known for its speed. Speed drives cost-efficiency. In this talk I will demonstrate ClickHouse cost-efficiency by storing 500 billion (!) rows and analyzing them quickly with a single ClickHouse server. Usually you would need a beefy multi-node cluster, but the right technology and technique enable us to use far less. To prove the point I’ll show how you can store the data on a cheap Intel NUC mini PC and still obtain decent query performance. We’ll explain the magic that allows ClickHouse to do this and also discuss performance implications for more capable environments.
